CAROUSEL (1998)

Rodgers & Hammerstein’s “Carousel” was our eighth production. We were joined by Mr. Allen Reynolds as the new Music Director for the YMT productions. Unfortunately, the high calibre of the performances was not matched by the size of the audiences, perhaps because “Carousel” is not regarded by some as one of the more popular musicals. The beautiful, but difficult, musical score included the show’s best known tune “You’ll Never Walk Alone”, a Broadway classic. The challenging production was thought by many of those who did attend to be the “best one yet”. Our students, and indeed the whole production team “rose to the occasion and produced a work of outstanding calibre” wrote one of our audience members while another stated that we had “raised the standard of musical theatre at Yale to new heights”.

ANECDOTE: By the way, Yar Recned appeared as a hobo at the fairgrounds in the opening scene of the play.
