The King and I (1991)

In my first year at Yale Secondary School (1989-90), we attempted to start a Musical Theatre production but were unsuccessful in doing so. We did, however, have a determination to create a production in 1990-9, and this time were succesful in getting the Musical Theatre group off the ground. “The King and I” was our choice as the opening production. The project was fully supported by George Peary, our Principal, and thus began what for me was to be a twenty-one year series of shows.
“The King and I” surprised a large number of people with its quality. Sue Brayton, Technical Director, and the students from the Stagecraft class created a wonderful red and gold set, complete with a royal palace, pagoda-like frame built around the entire stage at the Abbey Arts Centre. Excellent lighting and brilliant costumes created a colourful production that enthralled the audience. Strong performances from Andrew Long (King) and Kris Shulze (Anna) were supported by equally strong performances from many of the cast. A highlight of the show was the re-enactment of the “Small House of Uncle Thomas” dance/story told by a team of dancers choreographed by Gretchen Huizinga. The younger members of the cast from neighbouring schools featured as the “royal children” and did themselves proud with their performances. One of these younger students was Jadene Soon who went on to appear in 9 Yale productions and become a member of Yale Musical Theatre “Walk of Fame” (as did Andrew Long and Aaron Nicholson from this production).
All in all, it was a great start for Yale Secondary School Musical Theatre which brought numerous letters and phone calls of congratulations to the school.
